'Sloth' Articles
Sloth is defined as a disinclination toward doing any work. I offer that the “evil” of sloth arises from a refusal to indulge in it. Leading to an apathy and then to a misanthropy as you cannot allow others to engage in sloth if you will not permit it in yourself. We were not shackled with ego. We were gifted with it. So when ego leads us to moments of sloth, who are we to judge? We are touched by the spirit of sloth, and react with judgement. We analyze, or even worse reject these spirits, then wonder why they seem to dominate our reality.
We cling vehemently to disempowering relationships with the “gods/spirits/emotions” never realizing that any relationship is our choice. We are given total choice and total freedom.
“Nothing irritates me more than chronic laziness in others. Mind you, it’s only mental sloth I object to. Physical sloth can be heavenly.” Elizabeth Hurley (English Model and Actress. b.1965, Hampshire, England, UK)
“Moderation cannot claim the merit of opposing and overcoming Ambition: they are never found together. Moderation is the languor and sloth of the soul, Ambition its activity and heat.” François de la Rochefoucauld (French classical author, leading exponent of the Maxime, 1613-1680)
Sloth As Human Nature
I intend to explore sloth as a facet of human nature, as well as its impact and other related issues. Sloth is defined as a disinclination toward doing any work, and it was and is still a recurrent phase in human behaviour, and one that society in general is still conditioned to believe is an evil. In fact, the first impression of Christian proselytes as they began their missions in India was that they had a cultural inclination toward sloth. Because of their practice of meditation, they would put down “doing” in order to experience being more fully. Do we… Seek More
All Is Available
Plato attributes the rise of misanthropy (hatred for humanity) first to trust of humanity. An inclination in the individual to see all human beings as entirely virtuous. Then as their faith in humanity proves untenable, they developed first the disconnection, then an active avoidance of human community. In a sense, this faith is sloth is it not? But is the sin in this faith which modern religions still encourage us to have, or does it lay elsewhere? I was once there. I lost faith in everything around me. But as Arnie says… “I’mmm back!” Indeed, welcome back to life. We… Seek More
Acts Of Ego
I have laughed in intense horror. I have laughed in incredible shame and pain. I came to this point because in my youth I spent a great deal of time in tears. I came to grieve so deeply that I could not grieve any further. I could not see my grief as real. I would not say that ego is the source of suffering. I would say that in fact anyone who suffers from ego hasn’t been egotistical enough. Where does the ego lead us if we aren’t afraid of it? First it leads us to give value to our… Seek More
